Hi Listers,

One of our customers has migrated some of their applications to SLES10+SP2
on z9, they used to use SNMP to monitor all of their systems, and they would
likely to use the same way on zLinux.

My question is, will the SNMP on zLinux cause overhead to the whole system?
As I know, SNMP is passive mode, but if all of the Linux on z/VM are polled
every minute, won't it become some overhead? Does anybody use SNMP for zLinux
now, or what tool/way is recommended to use for integrating monitor data from
Linux on both z and other platforms ?

btw, the customer already has Performance Toolkit enabled, but the
information it provided is quite much and they would like to have an
integreated & clear panel displaying the important data both from zLinux
and Linux on other platforms. (they use SNMP for monitoring Linux on other
platforms, writing some programs to extract info and display on the monitoring
sceen.)

I found PTK has a user-defined-panel, but it doesn't tell whether it has any
interface that can be used to extract interested info directly from VM and send
to remote monitor servers (I think if data can be got from VM directly, it
needn't to use SNMP on zLinux, and the data from VM is more correct than from
Linux, without bringing any overhead to the whole system).

any recommendation for this scenario is appreciated~
