To control Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC) compression, use the mt
command provided by the RPM mt-st.  <<<<======  I really, really have to do 
that? <G>
Compression is off after the tape device driver has loaded. To switch 
compression
on, issue:

I think the lights are on, but nobody is home.....

You want the mtst command from the mt_st package.  The mt command is part of 
cpio, and doesn't support that option.
