Not really. You shouldn't need more than 5 or 6GB for the operating system itself. If you have requirements for large application file spaces, then go with SCSI over FCP. One thing you _don't_ want to do is have hundreds of DASD volumes making up an LVM volume group. LVM startup and commands get reaaaaaallly slow if you do that. You are right that you want to avoid having multiple Linux guests trying to do I/O to the same z/VM RDEV, if you don't want to set up either static or dynamic PAV. For that reason, I think a 3390-9 for the OS would be a reasonable approach.
