Craig, I have three LPARs that run Linux for zSeries.
The SUSE Linux install program has a way to format the drives. Once you boot the system and have gained access to the installer via VNC, you are presented with a series of panels. On one of them, you "activate" the dasd. Another option on that screen allows you to format the dasd. Ron
