Current boot loaders all require a non-LV location for the kernel. You could also use alternates such as booting from an NSS, booting from the reader, or using the sysload loader from developerWorks. Keep the emails where they insisted they wanted to go with an all-LVM system. When they have to jump through some hoops to recover their environment from backup, pull those emails out again to CYA.
