-  Using SECUSER/WAKEUP, 'watch' the user for the 'login' prompt
-  Use the 'ping' command on z/VM to ping the guests IP

Just a couple simple ones..    also - any monitoring agents you might have
(Omegamon, Nagios, etc) might serve the purpose.   You can also have a
script on Linux (say /etc/rc.local) which can issue 'vmcp msg operator i am
alive'   or something to that effect.
