Since moving to an OSA-Express3 (FC3373) I seem to have lost the ability to
create new Linux guests from scratch (i.e., punch Linux image, parm, initrd,
IPL reader, answer questions, etc.). Variations of minimal to comprehensive
Linux parm files have been attempted with the same results.
The OSA port number information was added to TCPIP PROFILE and DEFINE VSWITCH
accordingly with the move of z/VM 5.4 and existing Linux SLES 10 SP2 guests
being uneventful.
Some of the pertinent install question and answers are as follows:
Choose the network protocol: FTP
Please select the type of your network device: OSA-2 or OSA Express
Please choose the CCW bus interface: QDIO
Please choose the physical medium: Ethernet
Enable OSI Layer 2 support? No
Automatic configuration via DHCP? No
If you need a gateway to reach the server, enter the IP address of the Gateway.
This is the last question before the error.
*** An error occurred during the network configuration. Your network card
probably was not recognized by the kernel.
Q NIC and Q OSA look appropriate for the Linux guest. Q VSWITCH DETAIL at the
time of the error is as follows:
Adapter Owner: LINUX NIC: 0600.P00 Name: UNASSIGNED
RX Packets: 0 Discarded: 0 Errors: 0
TX Packets: 0 Discarded: 0 Errors: 1
RX Bytes: 0 TX Bytes: 0
Device: 0602 Unit: 002 Role: DATA vPort: 0091 Index: 0091
Options: Broadcast Multicast IPv6 IPv4 VLAN
Unicast IP Addresses:
XXX.XXX.XXX.6 MAC: 02-00-00-00-00-04
Multicast IP Addresses:
224.0.0.1 MAC: 01-00-5E-00-00-01
Same results with SLES 11, with the exception I am prompted for a relative port
number. Though not as familiar with the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Starter
System for System z I installed that starter system with seemingly similar
results:
No interface found
[1A..failedSetting up service network . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. ...failed
It is my understanding base z/VM 5.4 supports two ports per CHPID exploitation
and per the z/10 BC hardware announcement SLES 10 does as well. Not sure how
to debug linuxrc for better information on what is happening. Any clues would
be appreciated.
Regards,
Kevin
