Yes. It's a good idea, especially if you use it to establish a local copy and do future updates from that. Syntax and usage are kinda convoluted, but so is VMSES, so it's not that bad.
Mark Post did a nice article in zJournal on it a few issues ago. Definitely want to read that before you start messing with SMT - the docs are not very good.
