First, let's distinguish between CMM-1 and CMM-2/CMMA. It is the latter that
is being dropped by IBM. It will remain in the distribution versions in which
it currently resides, as long as they are supported (I believe). Based on the
comments from Shawn Wells, that means SLES only.

None of the Linux distributions have the skills to support CMMA once IBM has
stopped. That's a fact of life all too few people understand. And all the
more reason why the community needs sources outside of IBM to contribute
innovations to the kernel. Some have, but not been able to continue
development. Given the licensing, it would be nice if others could carry on,
but I can certainly understand why that hasn't happened. (Just look how long
64-bit Slack/390 has been "coming soon.")

IBM has not been successful in getting CMMA accepted "upstream." Due to finite
resources, they've decided that they need to stop trying. Given that CMM works
pretty well, I can easily support that decision, while not necessarily losing
hope that it might be reincarnated at some point in the future. There's
certainly much more that could be done to improve interoperability between
Linux and z/VM. I don't see that effort ending any time soon.
