My guess would be that something in the disk box got modified enough to
change the UUID of the disk. Remember that SLES10 defaults to that idiotic
by-id nonsense, so any changes to the box -- which I suspect included
updating the microcode when the new paths were installed -- will screw you
for by-ID.

Ray, 

Boot the starter system kernel using the SLES10 exec provided with the
starter system.  Bail out of the install and grab the sanedasdupdate tool
from http://download.sinenomine.net/sane-dasd-update/ and convert the by-id
thing to by-path. I would bet it will boot after that.
