If you use the X forwarding feature of your SSH client, and you have the 
xorg-x11-xauth package installed on your Linux system, you won't need to do the 
export of DISPLAY.  Tunneling X over SSH also avoids any problems with 
firewalls and someone sniffing your X session for passwords, etc.
