If you added the pack to the virtual machine, you then need to tell
Linux to use it.  (Just as z/OS can ignore devices, so Linux will, by
default, for safety's sake.)

Two things about the current suite of Linux offerings that may present
a learning curve:  First is that the under-the-covers files used for
handling devices have moved around lately.  This goes along with UDEV
growing up.  The other is that the distributors are way too fond of
stamping things in the "initial RAM disk".  There are good reasons for
using an INITRD, and there are good reasons for handling online of
devices in that phase.  But it gets confusing.

Summary:  Did you vary on the new disk?  ('chccwdev -e 1234', or
something like it)  Did you then re-stamp your INITRD?  ('mkinitrd')
Did you then also tell the bootstrap about it?  ('zipl')
