We just brought one up (the IBM version). So far, so good, although the
usefulness depends a LOT on how much hardware you put under it. Fortunately,
there are a LOT of 8-16 core Xeon systems on ebay for $1500-2K, so it's
affordable to go totally over the top with the Intel system. Also since the
zPDT systems are limited to 3 Z CPUs (max), the extra cores end up handling I/O
threads, so the number of cores is pretty much the gating factor for I/O
performance.

It will run VM 6.1, so it's enough of a z10 to satisfy that requirement. The
latest code drop adds the old AWS3088 CTC over IP support from the P390, so you
can build basic sysplexen between instances (not parallel sysplex, but
jesplexen). It also has OSA support, so you can use VSWITCHes.

If you're planning to run z/OS on it, you definitely want z/VM as well.

So far, it feels a lot like a revamped p390. There's a fair amount of work I'd
like to do on the packaging and software delivery in terms of making it
RPM-friendlier, but it's workable, and a heck of a lot smaller than a full z10.
A 16 core system plus a couple terabytes of disk fit nicely in 4 RU.

I just wish someone hadn't snarfed the 8 way Nehalem-EX test system we had for
a few weeks for a paying project. I'd REALLY like to see what it would have
been like on that box. Talk about MIPS 'R Us... wow.
