For us, it is noticeable. Our DB/2 systems can run an IVP with a grand total of 6 gigs. We are doing a simple proof of concept to remove any fear from the minds of those hesitant to entertain the thought of running z/Linux on z/Architecture. I've gone so far as to remove the word mainframe from any discussion regarding running z/Linux on our z10. I substitute z10 or z/Architecture for mainframe. At least some of the people I deal with don't like to hear the word mainframe.
We are borrowing a 3390 mod 54 from the z/OS system to satisfy the Oracle dasd requirement. No need to talk about performance of the i/o subsystem. We do not have PAV. Because it is a Proof of Concept, I've also made it clear to all parties this is NOT a benchmark. Once the obvious resistance is removed, we plan on getting a temporary license for our virgin IFL and letting z/Linux rip. When benchmark time comes, many things will change to closely match how this puppy would perform in production. One of z/VM system programmers attended a Velocity Software presentation in Hartford, CT.
