If you point the old host name to the new IP address, you should be able to delete it easily. Then, take out the fake /etc/hosts entry and add the new installation source. Or, if you used an IP address instead of a host name you could write an iptables firewall rule to reject any traffic to that IP address. Then you won't have to wait for the network timeout. Lots of ways to skin this cat.
