on my RHEL boxes, it uses about a quarter of the available memory too (and we have ours stripped down to only 2G RAM, so that doesn't leave much for the rest). And we noticed the messages only come out if you log in through the console--doesn't care about an ssh-login. I looked at all the dependencies for it and decided we could live without them (mostly desktop-related services, and we don't boot in rl5 on the zseries) to finally kill it, because the redhat guys said suppressing the messages and living with the pointless overhead was the only other option.
