Marcy, There is some performance information done by the firmware people here:
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/hardware/connectivity/ficon_performance.html z/OS was used so it is more of an upper bound on what you can expect from linux. The bottom of the page has links to Cathy's .pdfs which are very detailed.
