I'm curious, why do you NEED X to do maint? I do all our manual maintenance in Yast2 via Putty. There are a few things you can't do in non-graphical (like mark a patch taboo), but otherwise it's almost all there.
Also, You really might want to try VNC. If you don't have a vnc client, or know how to get started, just start vnc1 and vnchttpd1 services in xinetd and point your browser at http://hostname:5801 and you have a graphical desktop.
