That I'm sure depends on your connectivity speed and the amount of data and type of box. I could ask our data rep people here what they think it would take here... but YMMV greatly. Your storage vendor could probably give a better estimate. But yes, there would be a period where you are unreplicated, at least locally, maybe not remotely if you have that going.

This would be the window of exposure to only one local copy of the data. Then hyperswap. Then stop PPRC, replace the secondary box, start up PPRC again. Linux wouldn't exploit new things like zHPF until it was restarted, but that's ok with us. marcy -----Original Message----- From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Graves, Aaron Sent: Thursday, April 25, 2013 11:53 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LINUX-390] Migration from DS8100 to DS8870 We also use TDMF from z/OS while the system is down. It would be nice (hello IBM) if TDMF was available for z/VM to perform the migration without an outage like it does for z/OS. I'd be interested in hearing how a PPRC method would work. That thing is much faster than anything we have on VM (DDR, CA Hidro). http://www-935.ibm.com/services/us/en/it-services/softek-transparent-data-migration-facility-tdmf.html We were able to do that in dev. Production will be different to avoid outages. Hopefully via PPRC there. But that's a ways out.
