Thanks, Mark, that makes sense.  I'll bet that I was shutting Linux, logging 
back to the USER and booting Linux...never actually booting the USER.

Once you change the USER DIRECTORY you have to logoff and logon again.  If you 
are doing that, check to be sure that your USER DIRECTORY is being placed 
online immediately when you do the update.
