cross-posted to VM, linux-390 list servers. i have been tasked to install linux under VM in an IFL lpar on an ibm z10, and "make it so we can clone it later on". the VM is 6.1 the linux will be RedHat; someone else in the organization is going to get a "trial copy" from a/the vendor and provide me with dvd-s or an internet site.
meanwhile i have been reading up in the sc24-6194-00 'getting started w/ linux on system Z' manual, dtd 2009 , and in the sg24-7932-00 "virtualization cookbook for Redhat linux 6.0" Redbook dtd feb2011. Page 29 of 'getting started' says each linux virtual server should get its own 3390-3 dasd. so to that effect i have added 3 dasd 3390-3 to my VM: linx01, linx02, linx03. clipped 'em (in z/os); formatted them w/ cpfmtxa as 'perm', all 3338 cylinders; added all the new dasd to SYSTEM CONFIG ; and modified EXTENT CONTROL to make DirMaint aware of the new dasd as well . following along in chapter 7, page 71 ff of "getting started" i have defined a ' linuxdflt direct' and a 'linux protodir'. I have NOT, however, actually yet defined ANY linux virtual machines, i.e., i have NOT run any "dirm add <xxx> like linux <pw>" commands. I have NOT (yet) added the 'LINMSTR' master virtual machine. on page 75 of "getting started" it says i need to create a 192 disk for LINMSTR (only), which will contain the linux boot files and that said 192 disk is not replicated in clones. I am concerned about what happens AFTER the linux boot files are installed on 192 and linux has been initially for the very first time ipl-ed from the virtual machine reader, as follows: as a result of the "install" process (as opposed to the "ipl linux from linmstr's 192" process) all of the vendor's OPERATIONAL code (my term) ends up only on either the 150 or 151 minidisks which 'belong' to LINMSTR, and it is those minidisks which are subsequently cloned to produce 'cloned linuxen' . Is the sentence previous to this one a true statement? final questions: anybody see anything that i've missed in the previous SOE (sequence of events) ? any advice(s) re: what i'm trying to do ? thanks in advance. /s/ “sonny” aka tuco bonno; Graduate, College of Conflict Management; University of SouthEast Asia; "I partied on the Ho Chi Minh Trail - tiến lên !!
