zVM is meant to run a long time (I.e. Years at a time), so when you get to
a point where you think an IPL is required, take a look at what you¹re
doing; likely, you¹ll find that there is a way to do it that doesn¹t
demand killing off everything on the system.
I didn¹t see a step which included the directxa command. The zVM system
doesn¹t look at the source directory at all; you need to convert it to a
binary directory and store it in the proper location on the system disk.
That¹s what the directxa command does for you. (The DirMaint product would
handle the whole situation for you, and guard against finger checks in the
process. Please consider using it. {And no; I¹m not an IBM sales rep})
You don¹t even need to restart your Linux guest after adding the minidisk
to its directory entry. After properly adding it, issue the command SEND
CP <linuxguest> LINK * <vaddr> <vaddr> MR. This will break into CP on the
guest and issue the link command, which will add the disk to the
configuration. Then you should be able to issue the chccwdev to enable the
device, and go on from there.
Minimize your downtime, and show the Windows folks just how long a system
is supposed to run between boots.
