I have no exact formula for that, but basically you need a break even volume of
servers.
We have run Linux in z/VM since 2000, and we also have a big farm of x86 Linux.
Of course it depends what mix of servers you have.
My guess is that somewhere around 200-300 Linux servers is the break even point
for you.
The more the better.
Also there are some software much cheaper to run in z due to license rules(cost
per core).
Oracle is the best one here.

My guess is that you 14 IFL:s easy make that business case for you.
That would be about 500-700 virtual Linux servers.

Calculate the TCO of 500 Linux in x86, also don't forget not all services runs
ok in vmware.
Probably your db2 databases needs standalone x86 servers, making the z-case
better.

Subject: TCO comparison Intel vs EC12 IFLs

Any TCO comparisons of Intel x86 processors (vmware) vs EC12 IFLs that is not
authored by IBM? We are comparing costs on a EC12 14 IFL system running WMB,
WAS, and DB2 vs running this on an x86 solution running vmware. Looking for
information on how many x86 cores would be needed to replace the EC12 IFLs.
