Oh. Yuck. I didn't notice that part. There's no way to hold the old segment in this case. The trick is to do the PURGE/DEFSEG/SAVESEG as rapidly as possible to minimize the time the rescue system is unavailable. If a virtual machine tries to IPL/load a non-existent NSS/DCSS, the IPL/LOADSEG fails and the program keeps running, letting you respond appropriately (wait and retry).
