YaST has been the "preferred" method for working with DASD from the very beginning (SUSE Linux 7). But, it's not the only way, and it's not the only valid/supported way. YaST doesn't support everything you might ever want to do with disk storage, on any architecture. When the need to do those things arises, you _have_ to work outside of YaST. That's the nature of every [GT]UI ever written. When I first started giving talks at SHARE, I recommended that people get familiar with what YaST was doing under the covers. That way they could learn how things were done on a Linux system and eventually not use YaST unless they wanted to use it. (I called it getting to know where the bodies were buried.) I still think that's a valid approach. If a system administrator is not sure what YaST does versus what can be done with the low-level commands, it might be a good idea to use YaST exclusively until they are sure. I'm not saying it's required, but it might be a good idea.
