Let me check. What kernel level are using?

Subject: [LINUX-390] HyperPAV boot issues on ClefOS 6.7

We have ~20 zLinux systems running in their own LPARs (no zVM) all on RHEL 6.4
without any issues over the past year. All systems were rebooted weekly, again
without any issues.

We are in the process of migrating them to ClefOS 6.7 and have started to
experience random errors with the file system check at reboot essentially
causing the box to hang until someone manually intervenes. The following
messages are displayed on the console:
*** An error occurred during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-D to continue):

These reboot issues occur about 20% of the time. They are random but
frequently reproducible.

I don't see any other messages that indicate which file system is having
problems. But the box generally comes back up with a reboot which leads me to
believe there is no REAL file system corruption.

Through the process of elimination, I believe it is related to HyperPAV. We
are using the exact same /etc/dasd.conf file under ClefOS 6.7 that we were
using on RHEL 6.4. The file includes ucbs for 3 other base volumes (e956-e958)
and then ~220 HyperPAV alias ucbs (e890-e9ff). Like this:

0.0.e956 readonly=0 erplog=0 failfast=0
0.0.e957 readonly=0 erplog=0 failfast=0
0.0.e958 readonly=0 erplog=0 failfast=0

0.0.e890 readonly=0 erplog=0 failfast=0
0.0.e891 readonly=0 erplog=0 failfast=0
0.0.e892 readonly=0 erplog=0 failfast=0
...
0.0.e9ff readonly=0 erplog=0 failfast=0

If I remove the PAV aliases from /etc/dasd.conf, the reboot problems appear to
go away -- I can reboot 50 times without an issue.

Obviously, we want to use HyperPAV, so simply removing the aliases isn't really
a "fix".
Can anyone offer any advice on how solve this problem or further debug the
issue.
Something apparently changed between RHEL 6.4 and ClefOS (RHEL) 6.7.

Thanks,

Kevin Morris
