We upgraded RHEL6 to RHEL7 by building new RHEL7 servers. Our Redhat rep told us it was not a good idea to upgrade RHEL7 on top of RHEL6. The Redhat installation manual has a section for z systems, and is pretty good.
There is an IBM cookbook for RHEL7 also... it is written more for someone building the environment from scratch, so I had to figure out which pieces worked in my environment. The cookbook does have the best example of booting into emergency mode though. As I have been working with RHEL7, these are the books I have found to be the most helpful. IBM manuals The Virtualization Cookbook for IBM z Systems Volume 2 SG24-8303-00 Device Drivers, Features, and Commands on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 SC34-2710-05 ** pick the one for your version of RHEL7 Redhat manual Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Installation Guide - part III is for IBM Z architecture Good luck!
