I believe that I hit a similar problem albeit on zPDT when trying to
install RHEL 8.
* I mount the DVD as a loop device, modify the generic.parm so it
looks like this and then ipl_dvd the generic.ins:
ro ramdisk_size=40000 cio_ignore=all,!conde
rd.znet=qeth,0.0.0400,0.0.0401,0.0.0402,layer2=1,portname=awsosa,portno=0
ip=10.1.1.80::10.1.1.1:255.255.255.0:RHEL8:enccw0.0.0400:none
inst.repo=ftp://user:pw1@ipaddrscratch/ISO1
<ftp://ibmsys1:[email protected]/scratch/ISO1>selinux=0 rd.dasd=0.0.02d0
I have tried various other parameters here but to no avail.
* (rdosreport.txt) and here are the important parts:
localhost kernel: dasd-eckd 0.0.02d0: A channel path to the device has
become operational
localhost kernel: dasd-eckd 0.0.02d0: New DASD 3390/0C (CU 3990/01) with
10017 cylinders, 15 heads, 224 sectors
localhost kernel: dasd-eckd 0.0.02d0: DASD with 4 KB/block, 72122 40 KB

….
localhost systemd-udevd 736!: Process 'ccw_init' failed with exit code
1. (this might be a network device, not too sure)
…
This then happens as dasdconf.sh is running
localhost systemd 1!: Starting Open-iSCSI...
localhost multipathd 907!: --------start up--------
localhost multipathd 907!: read /etc/multipath.conf
localhost iscsid 909!: iSCSI logger with pid=910 started|

properly formatted InitiatorName. If using software iscsi (iscsi_tcp or
ib_iser) or partial offload (bnx2i or cxgbi iscsi), you may not be able
to log into or can't open InitiatorAlias configuration file
/etc/iscsi/initiatorname.iscsi
From journalctl:
localhost iscsid 922!: iSCSI logger with pid=925 started|
localhost multipathd 921!: --------start up--------
localhost multipathd 921!: read /etc/multipath.conf
localhost iscsid 925!: iSCSI daemon with pid=926 started|
localhost systemd 1!: iscsid.service: Failed to parse PID from file
/var/run/iscsid.pid: Invalid argument
localhost systemd 1!: Started Open-iSCSI.
localhost multipathd 921!: path checkers start up
localhost systemd 1!: Starting dracut initqueue hook...
localhost multipathd 921!: dasda: failed to get udev uid: Invalid argument
I'll give it another go with some of the suggestions from the responses.

Subject: [LINUX-390] Issues trying to install RHEL 8
Has anyone run into problems getting RHEL 8 to install on Z? I've run
into a weird problem. Two different experienced Linux guys have looked
at it, and we are all stumped.
