Thanks, Jan. You identified the problem. I failed to put the disk in /etc/zipl.conf before doing zipl. A colleague and I managed to stumble onto that after some struggle last night. I didn't see your email until this morning, but the link is just what I needed. It looks familiar, I bet I have read it before, but had just forgotten about it. I don't work with RHEL that often. You can bet it is bookmarked now.
