Hi Mauro,
Thank you!!! That was the problem. (i.e. corrupted .img file which had been IND$FILEd up)) I FTPd the files from a Windows Server (after MOUNTing the ISO on a (Virtual) Drive).

One other thing ... The Red Hat doc. has a mistake:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/7/html/installation_guide/sect-installing-zvm-s390

     16.3.1. Using the z/VM Reader

Perform the following steps to boot from the z/VM reader:

1.
If necessary, add the device containing the z/VM TCP/IP tools to
your CMS disk list. For example:

   cp link tcpmaint 592 592
   acc 592/fm/

Replace /fm/ with any |FILEMODE| letter.
2.
   Execute the command:

   |ftp /host/|

Where /host/ is the host name or IP address of the FTP server that
hosts the boot images (|kernel.img| and |initrd.img|).
3.
Log in and execute the following commands. Use the |(repl| option if
you are overwriting existing |kernel.img|, |initrd.img|,
   |generic.prm|, or |redhat.exec| files:

   |cd //location/of/install-tree//images/|
   |ascii |
   |get generic.prm (repl |
   |get redhat.exec (repl |
   |locsite fix 80 |
   |binary |
   |get kernel.img (repl |
   |get initrd.img (repl |
   |quit|

In "3.", it says:

|locsite fix 80 It should say instead: quote site fix 80 The adventure continues ... Regards, David |

I had this exact issue yesterday. The problem is probably a corrupted
bootstrap file.

Make sure to send the files as binary fixed 80, and prefer ftp transfer. I
used the file transfer of x3270 and it failed just like yours.

Hi Dan,
I am not sure that I understand what you're asking.
I PUNched these files (which I obtained from the downloaded ISO):
KERNEL IMG
GENERIC PRM
INITRD IMG

David

I created the Virtual Machine according to the "cookbook" and
SWAPGENd 2 Virtual drives before PUNching the 3 Files and IPLing from
the Virtual Reader.
is it from the installed system or from the installation?
