Of course there are a few disadvantages with static linking, notably that static linking puts you in the library maintenance business, for security patching for example. I'm assuming the libraries you need can still be compiled from source and linked in 31-bit mode. Another possible avenue to explore is a "radical" one: what this 3270 SNA controller is actually doing. Typically it's been a long, long time since operating systems that support SNA such as z/OS have required separate, "off board" controllers/gateways.
