My security office reviewed it and requires separate certification. 

It is not RHEL, it has a much different footprint and as you say a different 
way to update (mostly out our control) which makes  it different. 

The requirement to use this different OS pushes it from and Open Linux 
environment to a closed proprietary linux.

    I believe Enterprise CoreOS is Red Hat Enterprise Linux using a slightly
    different update mechanism. I don't know if that affects your approval
    process or not. [AKA if it needs to be certified with XYZ outside vendor..
    this would not help much as you would need that process to occur]
