To conclude this:

For SLES15.4-s390x, the newly released patch SUSE-SLE-Module-Basesystem-15-SP4-2023-41 corrects the kdump problem.

I think kdump has been broken all the time in SLES15.4 (and probably for all SLES15.x releases, but I’m not sure).

And seems like the story continues: we are still running some supported SLES12.5 servers, and in them, kdump seems to fail similarly (cannot find/mount the root disk).

Hi,

I haven't witnessed any kernel panic since the 00s (kudos to devs!).
Since then, kdump has become the primary tool for collecting evidence of those
events.
So I thought I need to test how kdumping works in the current SLES15.4 images.

echo c > /proc/sysrq-trigger

It fails. The kdump kernel boot ends up in "dracut-initqueue loop" trying to
get disk devs online:

...
systemd[1]: Reached target Basic System.
kernel: EXT4-fs (dm-0): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts:
acl,user_xattr. Quota mode:
none.
dracut-initqueue[401]: Warning: dracut-initqueue: timeout, still waiting for following initqueue hooks:
dracut-initqueue[401]: Warning:
/lib/dracut/hooks/initqueue/finished/devexists-\x2fdev\x2fdisk\x2fby-path\x2fccw-0.0.0300-part1.sh:
"[ -e "/dev/disk/by-path/ccw-0.0.0300-part1" ]"
dracut-initqueue[401]: Warning:

"[ -f
/tmp/net.kdump0.did-setup ]"
dracut-initqueue[401]: Warning: dracut-initqueue: starting timeout scripts
...

Boot ends up in emergency shell, and no dump is stored, naturally.

Somehow this looks similar to normal kernel boot problems there were too many
in a period with some
SLES12.x releases, when dracut was quite recently introduced. But I'm not sure
if the problems are
of the same root.

We have a case open with SUSE support, but I thought I'd ask if anybody has
been playing with
kdumping lately.. (hopefully not in real case incidents, though).
