Folks,
I've given up on waiting for the Linux/8086 source code to get to a stage
where it is usable, and hence have attempted to hack up the source of good
ol freedos to resemble linux.
I can now boot up a small shell I called lash (limited ash), run some
basic commands on the EDFS (extended dos file system) and EVEN connect the
system to my bigger linux box using a modified tinytcp driver, and ping. I
even have coded a very, very, very basic NFS which is very, very buggy
telnet which I can sort of use my linux system through although it crashes
frequently.
Can I do this in ELKS? Does ELKS have reliable floppy support? In DOSBell,
I can do the following:
# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt
edfs: 360kb floppy; last checked 01/14/1999
# cd /mnt
# ls
[utils] chickens.txt
dogusmogus.gz dosbell-man.txt
fruitloops.tar.gz dd.c
# df
Filesys. Size Used Avail Mounted on
/dev/hda1 024M 022M 002M /
/dev/fd0 360K 320K 040K /mnt
# telnet biggerkitty
Checking /etc/hosts for IP Address... found
Opening TCP Connection to 192.168.10.21... connected
Debian GNU/Linux 2.0 biggerkitty.mlug.org.au
biggerkitty login: mstrates
You get the picture. I'm nearly ready to post some binaries out, so don't
ask for availability. Its very unstable, and multitasking isn't really
working yet. And, as a bonus, it can run DOS programs.
