I always like Windows/286 2.1. I liked it so much I
wrote a (text-mode; used a cool smooth mouse pointer
by playing with bit plane 2 though) cute clone of it,
that even used the same memory management concepts
(of course, my implementation had some serious bugs!).

But Windows 1.0 ran in 320K mem. This is relevant to me
as I have an IBM PC with 320K mem and two double-sided
disks and I can run Windows 1.0 on it. (Along with my
lovely bus mouse!) You can actually use Write or Paint
and my Epson MX-80+GRAFTRAX-80 to print pretty
pictures.

Applications *could* be minimised in Windows 1.0; they
just couldn't overlap.

/me is suddenly inspired with nolwm, a non-overlapping
    window manager

This is just too cool.

I liked Gem, but found it too expensive (Windows was free
for me <grin>).

Hopefully I'll have some free time soon to play with it
(just read the code; it's like all my childhood dreams are
coming true: Gem released, CP/M released...)
