A good question. I think it was changed from linux so that code the
depended on linux header files would not find them if compiled for ELKS,
thus making sure that the code was ported correctly.

The problem with using an elk is that they are very similar to a gnu, which
might think ELKS was more closely associated with GNU. I had an idea a
while back to base a logo around a norse rune called elks, whcih has quite
an appealing shape to it.
I have also thought about whether it would be a good idea to change the
meaning of the E in ELKS. The name is well known, but there are now many
free OSs targetted more directly at embedded, and ELKS does not seem to be
going that way. One possibility that occured to me was to change it so that
ELKS stood for Elks Linux Kernel Subset, thus making it into a recursive
acronym in the traditional way.
