Sorry, it's not the driver in general that has problems with SMP.
I am using a 3c509 w/o problems in an heavily loaded Asus P2B-DS
(2xPIII450) and it is rock stable.
If you really want to avoid the 3coms, try to get an DEC Tulip based
card. We have two of them working in SMP-machines.
BUT: I also have such a card in my BP6, and it locks. But that is not
related to the card - it also locks without the card....
