By putting the drive on your udma66 controller, you will get sustained
transfer rates (as reported by hdparm -t) of about 7 MB/sec faster.
Typical udma33 sustained rates are 17-18 MB/s, wheeras udma66 gives 24-25
MB/s.
I had an *incredibly* hard time getting that Maxtor 40gb working on my
hpt366 controller though. It would keep locking up the system whenever I
did an intense disk access such as hdparm -t after mounting the drive
(even if I unmounted it before hdparm -t). Turned out the main problem was
that I had a soundcard in pci slot 3, which shares IRQs with the hpt366
controller. I moved the card to slot 4 and it started working. I also
could not put ATAPI devices such as cdrom drives on the hpt366. The system
would lock when I tried to mount the device.
BTW, all this trouble occured even with the newest hpt366 bios, and
hedrick's patch on the newest linux kernel (2.2.15).
I would like to hear of your success getting your drive to work. It is
much simpler than my experiences for most people.
