I've had the same problems as well. Occansionally, I get bored and retry
using the HPT366, but get the same result every time.
My solution was to put a promise Ultra66 in the slot (3rd if I remember
correctly) that shares the interrupt with the HPT366.
After I did that, my problem went away. I do not get any APIC or timeout
errors. My system has been very stable, usually 2-4 weeks at a time. I
have a difficult time with longer uptimes because of bi-weekly power outages
in my area. (A UPS that lasts 12 hours is a bit expensive ;-( )
The Ultra66 is cheap and is supported in the 2.4.x series, The IDE patch
will give you support in the 2.2.x kernel as well.
When I did get timeout messages with the HPT366, there never really seemed
to be a problem. The system remained stable other than the messages showing
up.
Does anyone else have any insight as to how critical a problem the timeout
is?

Subject: [LINUX-ABIT] Lockups using the hpt366 on BP6
Hi
I have been running stable for a while with the RU BIOS
and kernel 2.4.0-xxx. Then I bought a 20Gb UDMA/66 HD put
it on the hpt366 controller (first time I've ever used it
on this Mobo) and then the trouble began. I get following
error:
hde: timeout waiting for DMA
ide_dmaproc: chipset supported ide_dma_timeout func only: 14
and my system my system crash approx. once per day. Searching
the archives for this list revealed that this is a well known
problem, but I could not find any real solution/conclusion
to the problem.
Before I disable UDMA/66 and moves the HD to the UDMA/33
controller, I have to ask if there is anything I can do to
fix this, e.g. use the noapic option, disable Sharing PCI
IDE interrupts support, use a different mode in the htp366
bios etc.
Thanks,
Lars
