I used to have the same problem as you. Luckily, my computer has not
locked up in a while. I still get APIC errors reported, but it does not
lockup my system.

My setup,

Bios QQ
kernel 2.4.1,
(I'll check my version of X probably 4),
450 Mb ram-64+128+256
30Gb on hdt366
2Gb --ide1
10Gb--ide2
CD/RW--6x4x20
All-in-Wonder-Pro w/TV-tuner 8Mb AGP2x
1 extra cooling fan -large next to the video card.
250w power supply.
2x400 OC & 510Mhz
No fan in installed BX chip.

This is what I had to go through overtime to fix my similar problem.

First,
you need to check that the CPU fans are getting a good connection.
open up your computer and start X. make sure that the fans on the CPUS are
firmly connected-shake the connectors a little and see if X locks up. This
was causing random lockups in mine at one point. I ended up replacing one
fan. I came across this by luck when I accidently bumped my computer
while using X.

Second,
In the cmos be sure you disable all the power management stuff and turn on
wakeup on mouse movement. leave the fans, harddrives on all the time. The
only thing at most you should have enabled is the screenblank with timer.
My X-server used to go to sleep and it would not wake up with the mouse
or keyboard.

Third,
Disable power management in the kernel.
Disable-the xscreensaver to help you try to obtain stability.

Note that the old ALL-IN-WONDER-PRO cards have problems running at
40-45Mhz bus speeds. I found this on their website. So if overclocking
you should set the appropriate settings on the CPU to regain stability
first.

This does not directly answer the question, but it takes some
investigation.

The ATI/TV and sound get piped directly to a video portion in the video
ram. So even with the lockup, the memory is still active in the video
card. I think that's why GATOS reserves part of the memory.
