In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

'Assalamo 'alaykum wa-rahmatullaah wa-barokaatuh to all Believers.

All praise is due to Allah (SWT). We praise Allah, thank Allah, seek Allah
said and beseech Allahs Guidance. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil
of our selves and the faults of our deeds. Whomever Allah guides, there is
none to cause him to err; and whomever Allah allows to stray, there is
known to guide him. I bear witness that there is none other worthy of
worship except Allah, alone; and I bear witness that Muhammad is Allah's
slave and Messenger.

** "O ye who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news,
ascertain the truth, lest ye harm people unwittingly, and afterwards
become full of repentance for what ye have done. (Quran 49:6 [Surah
Al-Hujraat]"

Background:

In today's "information age," there is a plethora of information and
misinformation, from which Muslims must learn to discern the useful from
the irrelevant and harmful.

Stories are produced that do not exist or that includes just a little bit
of fact. Most of the time such a story will lack substance -- making a
mountain out of a mole-heap. E.g., what was the major focus during the
rioting in Indonesia May 1998?

On Thursday, 23 July 1998, Sydney Morning Herald, reported about the
persecution of the ethnic Chinese by Muslims. The newspaper wrote: ".... I
knew she was in great danger and I screamed but one of the mob slapped me
in the face. My father who also screamed, was hit with a piece of wood and
he fainted. My mother had fainted when Fenny was dragged to the sofa. I
could only pray. Uncle Dodi kept trying to stop them by offering them
money. His efforts were fruitless. In the end, five people raped Fenny.
Before they raped her they said: "Allahu Akbar [an Islamic phrase in
Arabic meaning "God is great"]. They were ferocious and brutal." ('God is
great' cried the five who raped and killed my little sister. Sydney
Morning Herald, Thursday 23 July 1998, originally from The Guardian,
www.smh.com.au)

Double standards are also frequently applied. E.g., when Palestinians set
off suicide bombs in Israel, the media called them "terrorists". But when
an Israeli slaughtered 29 innocent Palestinian worshippers in a Hebron
mosque, the murderer was called a "fanatic", an "extremist", or a new and
popular word increasingly being used, a "zealot". Even the assassin of
Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin - a Jewish student - was never called
a "terrorist".

Another example of a palpable untruth was a photograph of one of the 55
children massacred by the Israelis in 1996 in a UN battalion headquarters
at Qana in southern Lebanon. The magazine reported that the small victim
had been "killed in crossfire". Lies! The Israelis claimed they were
firing at Hizbollah guerrillas 600 feet from the base - while not a single
Israeli was hurt and Hizbollah were firing at a hill south of Qana.

Muslims are not given equal access to the media. How many letters to the
editor are written that do not get published? Many! Not only are we
attacked in the media, but also we do not even have the chance to defend
ourselves.
