There are many modules for scsi devices. They
should be in /lib/modules/.../scsi/*
(approximately, depending on your distribution).
If they are not in the kernel they can be loaded
via insmod. Check this commands: lsmod, insmod,
modprobe, rmmod.

If for some reason you need them in the kernel
you would have to build a kernel with them, but I
have never found that necessary.

In my experience the most important difficulty
has been having the computer recognize the card
once it is installed (interrupts, dma and all
that). From there on it should be downhill.
