Um...every morning....remove, label, and store last night's backup tape.
Every afternoon...insert new backup tape in tape drive.

I think that about covers it.

[Clue for the fucking clueless...the daily, weekly, and monthly
maintenance is all taken care of automagically by the cron
facility...which runs any program you want according to any
schedule you want]

You do realize that NT 3.1 was released at the same time as WfWG 3.1. NT
3.1 had NTFS file protections.

Dos or Windows on Netware didn't allow peer connections, it was only a
connection to the server.

Of course there are. But those programs have typically not followed the API
and relied on undocumented side effects that went away when the DLL changed.

When an upgraded DLL does legitimately break applications, MS fixes it, like
they did when SP6 broke Notes.

That's because IBM mainframe equipment still runs on EBCDIC.

Consider if you upgraded your IBM mainframes...and then had to
also change in each of multi-million dollar 100-page/second printers.

No, it was Novell that was providing most people the functionality
that MS couldn't. I used AT&T unix myself back then, with something
very similar to samba that they called the 'Starlan DOS Server' and
through an assortment of upgrades this evolved to 'StarGroup' and
was a WFG/Win95 compatible netbios-over-tcp server - but it
never had to deal with the 32Meg partition limits. Everything
migrated transparently to Linux/samba eventually. I recall one of
my friends trying to install the MS LanMan server back then and
it couldn't deal with a 9 gig SCSI drive that he had been using under
Netware. Great server design...

Yes, but the experience of real-life NT admins DOES mean that
the machines don't stay up.

Here's a clue:

A fellow contractor told of helping with an inventory...
there was a Sun box which had been overlooked in the last
inventory, and had gone 13 months without any sort of
maintenance.....everyone had completely FORGOTTEN about
this machine's existance....because it was performing
ALL of its functions flawlessly.

If this were, instead, a LoseNT machine, would such a situation
even be possible?

for 5 weeks...maybe. 13 months? Not on your life.

Mac OS X will seem a lot like windows to a windows user
because Microsoft have been trying to copy the Mac finder
for years and years. Each release of Windows gets a bit
closer to the Mac.

It will, however, act a lot more like unix because it's
a unix like kernel and OS underneath the GUI bits.

You can take a look at an early Mac (eg., a classic,
as I have here) and you'll see many things which windows
has been designed to emulate (functionality, not binary).
