You are entitled to do so. If you are building the product upon GNU software
you will have to abide by the GNU licensing restrictions. The point where
you want to distibute the program is the point where you must make the
source available to anyone you distribute the program to.

See the GNU GPL:
http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

The preamble states it quite succinctly:
"For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether gratis or
for a fee, you must give the recipients all the rights that you have. You
must make sure that they, too, receive or can get the source code. And you
must show them these terms so they know their rights."

If you see here:
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/apsl.html

You will see how Richard Stallman disliked the original Apple Public Source
License because you couldn't do this, and how it was incompatible with the
GPL:
Disrespect for privacy
The APSL does not allow you to make a modified version and use it for your
own private purposes, without publishing your changes.

> Would this be a bad way of doing OpenSource development, counter to the
> intentions of OpenSource?

I don't think it is open source development. It is in-house development
built upon open source software. If you later decide to distribute your
efforts then everyone will look forward to the source.

Regards,
Adam Warner

In that case I'd like my $50.00 back on my Caldera Open Linux 2.4 because it
wouldn't run a Viper v550 out of the box. Wouldn't run my modem or sound

You mean the repeated crash reports of Netscape on Linux are the fault of
the OS??

No...if you had done PROPER PLANNING, then you would have purchased
hardware that's supported under Linux for your Linux system.

Since you FAILED to do this, you did PISS POOR PLANNING.

You're really a fucking idiot.

If you don't keep the tube circuitry on, then there's NO REASON to

My loseDOS box averages about 3 boot-ups per shut down....

Sorry, I only looked up the OS, not the Web server. As of yesterday, Solaris ran
35, Windows ran 20 (plus probably two more unknowns), and Linux ran 19. Of the
Windows systems, only 11 have upgraded to W2K a year after it was released.
Hardly a big endorsement of Windows, let alone W2K.

Ah, yes. Running iPlanet is a big endorsement of Microsoft's products too!

Barely makes a showing? What was that percentage again?

Also, as I mentioned previously, the Fortune 500 sites have mostly been around a
while, and the IT staffs at F500 companies tend to be very conservative (I know
this from personal experience), so the F500 gives a good snapshot of what the Web
looked like five years ago. Who whould choose iPlanet today?

My view on games for Linux is: don't spend too much worrying about them. But
it's a good exercise in general, because the principles in creating games may
be applied to create useful software, like graphics and visualization
software. Just don't spend too much time worrying about them.

As long as it's running a Linux or Unix OS, instead of a pathetic IBM
OS with commands that always generate SCREENS full of wordy blather,
I'm all for it.

I don't give a shit what kind of hardware is underneath, just as long as
it's running a sane OS... (i.e. NOT windows and NOT *typical* IBM OS)
