Good god, Matthew, you really are a fucking moron.

What part of "no recievables, no deliverables" do you not understand?

All they have to do is have a planted "bettor" come in and deliberately
lose at the blackjack table. Ta-daa. Money successfully laundered.

What records?

What's the undercover agent going to see, other than some slob losing
at blackjack (even better if he buys a drink or two so he can play
the part of DRUNK stupid slob.

Federal court already ruled that a Colorado law is null and void because
it came into being through a referendum process (an *ILLEGAL* democratic
process), rather than through the legislature (the republican, and ONLY
LEGAL PROCESS for making law at the state and federal level).

What...is a discussion of communism, and the military's role to defend
the Constitution, from all enemies foreign and domestic (including
bubble-headed true-believer communist bastards) somehow off topic
for US.MILITARY.ARMY?

If you truly think so, then maybe you weren't paying attention

This is complete and utter Hogwash. First, if you think this is a valid
test of multitasking, you need to educate yourself. Next, I did this
on my Win2K system too. You forgot to mention that when certain *.exe
files are executed, a dialog comes up stating that the application
"can't be run in win32 mode". Launching of all other applications
BLOCKS ON THIS DIALOG until the 'OK' button is pressed. You call that
multitasking? Additionally, when closing many of those applications
that you have opened (like via a logout or shutdown), you will get
additional BLOCKING on dialogs stating that some applications "need
more time to complete" and proceeding with the entire logout and/or
shutdown is suspended until you hit the 'OK' button on the dialog.

Man, get a clue!

This thread gets trotted out about once a quarter. I've seen it for nearly
9 years, even in the old comp.os.linux days. And frankly nothing has changed.
I dubbed it a long time ago the "Let's dumb down Linux for Grandma.' thread.

Let me give you the short version of the issues involved:

1) No one standard desktop will satisfy all users.
2) A standard desktop that satisfies the majority of users will frustrate
   the experts.
3) Users that use software consistently stop being novices users and become
   intermediate if not advanced users.
4) Users are USERS! not administrators. Systems that are developed so that
unknowledgeable users can administrate by definition must have a
significantly higher level of complexity that one where the administrators
must have a clue. This complexity adds bloat and instability to the system.

And the final issue

5) M$ has an illegally gained mindshare in the computer industry and no amount
of change in Linux is going to change that mindshare. I do believe that your
assertion that M$ is going to shoot themselves in the foot. However nothing
significant on the Linux side will change that mindshare.

Now I'd be remiss if I didn't throw out a counterproposal. It takes into
account that all users are not the same and that users transistion during
their continued interaction with machines and software. In short it's easier
and more effective to change users than it is to change systems.

1) Instead of having a standard anything, propose a set of reasonable and
useful defaults. This way novice users start from a well known point.
2) Instead of removing features from software, create a layered system where
more advanced features are available as users need them.
3) Consider systems where remote administration is possible. Linux is ideal for
this type of activity. I have no issue with simplified administrative systems
for competent administrators. But you create a monster when you try to create
a system that self administrates because the user doesn't have a clue about
what's going on.
4) Lastly work on changing folks mindshare about Windows machines. This by far
is the toughest task.

In closing consider the PalmPilot as an example of the "change the user, not
the system" argument. For years many different attempts were made to build
a portable handwriting computer such as GO and the Newton. They never
succeeded because their systems tried to conform to the users. The Palm
instead asked the user to learn a new way to write. Once done the system
becomes simple and accurate. The Palm thrived.

Linux need to do something similar. It does it's part by having reasonable
defaults and judicious "complexity hiding". However we ask users to learn
the rationale for keeping the complexity, and watch how grateful they'll be
when it's there when they need it.

And there, in a nut shell, is the Microsoft argument for superiority. Thank

I see what you mean. Yes, I suppose that's true, but still, their political
fr4eedom is pretty weak. (Even the Chinese have the "freedom" to pack their
bags and go, after they've worked for a few years)

Depends on how much those in power NEEDED the economic benefits of the
inhabitants. It might not be publicly expressed, but I'm sure that
everybody understood (both the ruling elite and the average businessman
on the street) that the source of the enclave's wealth lies in the
businessmen's willingness to work IN Singapore...and that any moves
which motivate the businessmen to pick up and leave is ultimately
not helpful to those who run the joint.
