Quite true. The Ctrl-Z is also DECs EOF file marker. MS used DEC
equipment for quite some time and one wonders if they slowly kept
mimicking some of VMSs' features.
One thing they didn't copy was the automatic versioning of a file...

Since there is no junior-high-designed "registry" to get corrupted,
there is ZERO need to shut down other programs to install a new app.
On REAL operating systems, you can have 500 programs (or thousands, even),
and install a new app....WITH NO FEAR of anything bad happening.

Yeah, I had that happen to me too. I had Suns O/S in a dual boot
configuration. Then I decided to install Linux in place of the Sun
O/S. I made sure that the MBR was fdisk/mbr to force a re-write. Nope!
O/S not found on booting. No big sweat, I installed Linux (Caldera 2.4)
and used their fdisk to look at things. Somehow MS wrote the MBR into
two sections for its own o/s. I fixed it using Linux fdisk and then I
got MS O/S back again. Then I bumped Caldera off and put in Solaris 8.
So far so good for over 4 months now. No lock ups, no freezes, no
phantom shut-down problems. Boot into Win98 and out of the wild blue it
will freeze up. I have to use the back power switch.

Well, okay, I *did* have to actually go to the provider's configuration page
to define which MAC addresses I wanted to assign which IPs to. Static IPs
assigned by DHCP - go figger. :)
