This application was developed because Brazilian government is pushing for usage of free software inside the government. The Income Tax Submission Application was a widelly used example of the dominance that Microsoft Windows had inside the governement, because it was an application used by millions of users, citzens that had no choice but to use the Windows system to talk with the Government.
So, in trying to free users of this lock, and show the commitment from the government to actually support free software, they decided to create an application that would run on Linux. This was the target, the free software OS. But, the choice for Java did wonders, because now the application runs everywere: Windows, Linux, Mac, Solaris, and many others.
So, this application highlights many benefits:
- how important Java is in expanding open source usage - how strong is a desktop application in Java - how Java can support the government in talking to all citzens - how much better it is a desktop application vs a web application, and that Java can be used for that successfully
The application was released last monday night (March/15). In the last 2 days, we had more then 13,000 downloads.
