I did have similar problems on my SX164 with Qlogic 1020 SCSI controler.
I disbled firmware download during startup (one #define in driver source)
and that cured the problem. Nowdays I have AHA2940UW in it and works OK.
I was using 2.2.1x driver at that time (I still use 2.2.16 now).
