=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
This is the first public release of gpart, a small tool
which attempts to reconstruct the primary partition table
of a hard disk by stepping through its sectors and looking
for possible filesystem/partition starts.
Because this is an alpha-release it still needs lots of
testing. Especially the HPFS-detection was not tested.

Linux today (the fourteenth of January) won the somewhat prestigious
overall category of the Norwegian Computerworld magazine's yearly
award, beating IBM and a hip telco.
Tux, assisted by most of the Linux Norge board, accepted the prize.
Linux Norge is an organization set up to run www.linux.no and provide
information about linux in Norway.
I expect there's a picture of Tux close to http://www.computerworld.no
by the time you read this. Look for someone with a yellow beak and a
bottle of beer.

Subject: Call for Location: 6. International Linux-Kongress
Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 00:19:52 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
As we promised during the last Linux-Kongresses, we want this event
to change its location from year to year. Therefore, we are now
looking for volunteers who can present a location which fulfills
the conditions stated below.
Since this is the first "open"-call for location for the Linux-Kongress,
and we somehow have to restrict the number of offers among we can
select, we set up the restriction that the location must be in
Germany. From 2000 on, we can imagine to make the Linux-Kongress
in other middle-European countries.
For this reason and to avoid problems which might occur from back-and-forth
translation, the following information is given is written in
German.
Ende Mai/Anfang Juni durchzufuehren.
* Hilfe bei der Referentenanreise
* Hilfe bei der Gestaltung der Web-Seiten (Anreise-Skizzen etc.)
* Organisation des Rahmenprogramms:
** Referentenabend
** Geselliger Abend
** Rahmenprogramm fuer die Referenten, die erst am Wochenende
wieder abreisen
* Wahl des Hotels
* Information der oertlichen Presse
* Vorbereitungen im Tagungsgebaeude
* Organisation Kaffeepausen
* Einteilung der Helfer waehrend der Veranstaltung (siehe unten)
* etc.
Helfer fuer folgenden Aufgaben benoetigt:
* Hilfe bei der Registrierung
* Hilfe beim Aufbau
* Leitung der Vortragsreihen
* Fahrdienst
* etc.
Vorgeschlagener Tagungsort, ungefaehre Kosten, moegliche Termine
GUUG-Geschaeftsstelle
Elsenheimerstr. 61
80687 Muenchen
Tel: 0 89/5 70 76 97
FAX: 0 89/71 01 95 82
zur Verfuegung.

BALUG meeting Tue 01-19-1999 at 6:45 PM. RSVP ASAP to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Join us on Tuesday January 19th 1999 for an outstanding banquet with
subsequent meeting to be held at the venerable Four Seas Restaurant in the
heart of San Francisco's historic Chinatown.
Four Seas Restaurant
731 Grant Street
San Francisco, California 94108
The Four Seas will host us in the upstairs banquet room, seating is
limited to 300 so please make your reservations early and insure priority
seating. A note to [EMAIL PROTECTED] will assure your seat at this gala
event! As usual, libation is available and with enough reservations we
can get the banquet room bar opened. The Four Seas banquet room is
accessed from a staircase at the rear of the restaurant lounge. (look for
the Linux User Group sign) Dinner is $10.00 per person, if you choose not
to dine with us, a small donation to help cover meeting costs is
appreciated. We start promptly at 7:00 PM, doors open at 6:30.
Featured Speaker:
The third Tuesday of the month is almost here, and that means Chinese Food
and Linux Based Appliances. Join us when the Corel Computer team tells us
about the status of the Corel NetWinder, Corel Software and Future
Hardware products. They have promised us an outstanding technical
presentation featuring San Mehat and will be bringing some great door
prizes.
Directions and Information
With enough parking karma you should be able to find street parking in the
area. Otherwise we recommend parking at the city garage located at Kearny
and Commercial- directly across from the Chinatown Holiday Inn. Traffic
into the city during rush hour has been unusually heavy. If you are
coming up from the south bay we recommend 101 to Civic Center (stay on the
right), bear left off the exit and bear left at Market Street. Then take
Van Ness (N) to Broadway and make a Right. Go through the Broadway Tunnel
to Columbus, make a Right on Columbus, go about four blocks and make a
Right to Kearny, Right ON Kearny and a left into the garage just past
commercial. Further information is available at www.balug.org.
Network connections will be available through our Ricochet gateway and we
encourage you to bring your friends, family, notebooks, questions, power
strips, network hubs and appetites. In addition to being a fun, creative
and knowledgeable group, the dinner alone is easily the best chow deal in
the city. Speakers, door prizes and other additional late breaking stuff
can be found at www.balug.org.
Vendor Table Info
BALUG encourages Linux related vendors to set up tables. Please contact
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for information on setting up a table.
RSVP and questions to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and of course- Rick Moen will be
there!

Cost: FREE
Who: Anyone and everyone.

Presentation:
This month we are following on from last months meeting where
Richard Sharpe gave a brief description of what is needed to
get an Samba machine operating within an NT domain.
This meeting will be carry a lot more technical content, with
a number of machines demonstrating what Richard and the Samba
team are doing.
Using Samba in Anger
====================
In past talks we have heard that it is possible to use
Samba to replace many aspects of Windows NT. Now of course,
the Microsoft Bigots would say that the Samba folks are
just blowhards.
In this talk, we will actually set up Samba in different ways to
demonstrate exactly what needs to be done to allow Samba to
provide Windows NT functionality, and to demonstrate that it
is more than just talk. In particular, we will set up Samba
to allow for domain logons from Windows 9x devices (and Windows
for Workgroups), set up Samba as a Primary Domain Controller, and
set it up as a domain member. If we have a copy of Samba
2.1.0, we should also be able to demonstrate that the PDC
functionality is becoming more robust.
Extras:
As per usual, if you are having a problem with your Linux installation,
feel free to bring your machine. Make sure you warn
