=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
This is an annoucement for an update of the pload program.
Pload is an Athena widget based ppp monitor similar to xload. It
displays totals and current rates for both inbound and outbound data.
Pload was designed to be portable to any platform that can run pppd
and X11.
Changes: Fixed some X errors that happened under Solaris concerning
zero sized widgets, added user customizable scales, changed rate
labels to show b/s, k/s, M/s dependant on magnitude, added horizontal
orientation option.
The latest version is at http://www.engr.utk.edu/~mdsmith/pload/ and
is archived at

Subject: Enhydra - Open Source Java Application Server
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 00:54:52 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
Announcing Enhydra 2.0: Java Application Server for Open Source
Jan 15, 1999 - There is now an Open Source answer for turning an
Apache Web Server, or any other industry Web Server, into a full
function Java application server. Enhydra.org announces "Enhydra",
a Java application server and development environment for the
Open Source community.
Available immediately under FreeBSD-style licensing, the entire
Enhydra run-time and development environment can be downloaded
from the home of Enhydra.org, http://www.enhydra.org. On-line
demos and an FAQ are provided for quick evaluation. Latest news
on updates, bug reporting capability as well as extensive
documentation are also made available. This site is maintained
by Enhydra.org, an open organization dedicated to serving Enhdyra
and its growing Open Source developer community.
Written entirely in Java, the Enhydra source code distribution
supports all the tools and infrastructure necessary for multi-tier
client/server application development and deployment. Its flexible,
comprehensive functionality is the result of nearly two years of
commerical consulting projects for IT and technology product
customers. For developers handcuffed by the practical limitations
of CGI scripting, Java application servers such as Enhydra are key
to developing more scalable and maintainable Internet
application-based services.
The Enhydra Application Framework implements a servlet-based
architecture of common services supporting business, presentation
and data logic. Services include user and session management, as
well as establishing and maintaining database connection sessions.
Presentation services feature Enhydra Jolt, a technology that goes
beyond Sun Microsystems Java Server Pages to support structured
strategies for embedding Java in HTML/Javascript files.
For an enhanced servlet running environment featuring embedded
servlet management, monitoring and debugging, Enhydra MultiServer
is included as a complementary technology. All Enhydra technology
supports any potential server platform, including Unix, Linux,
Windows and NT. The only requirement is the presence of an
installed JVM for Java 1.1.5 or higher.
As guided and supported by Enhydra.org, Enhydra will be perpetuated
by the Open Source model of developer community involvement and
interaction to continue the enhancement and refinement of the
Enhydra source base. Enhydra.org is eager to enlist members who
would like to help contribute to the successful promotion of an
Open Source alternative to commerical Java application servers.
A majordomo interest group, [EMAIL PROTECTED], can be subscribed
to by simply mailing to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a message that
includes the single line "subscribe enhydra" or "subscribe
enhydra-digest" (no quotes).
Enhydra is currently sponsored by Lutris Technologies, a consulting
firm that designs and builds strategic Internet applications for
commercial IT organizations and product companies leveraging
Internet technologies. Lutris believes that an open approach to
Enhydra development will benefit everyone in the Internet community.
Enhydra.org will soon announce an on-going series of technology
releases and updates, including Enhydra XMLC, an XML-based
technology designed to simplify the interactive relationship of
graphic designers and Java developers during development of
dynamic HTML presentations.
Java is trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Subject: Term 2.4.2 released
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 01:47:49 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
INTRO:
Term and its clients support multiple, compressed, and
error corrected communication channels over a regular
serial link, typically a modem connection. The clients
can set up channels to run an interactive shell on the
other system similar to rlogin(1), to execute commands on
the other system similar to rsh(1), to transfer files in
either direction, to redirect X server connections from
one system to the other, or to redirect any network port
connection from one system to a port on the other. Any of
these can occur simultaneously, and in either direction.
CHANGES FROM term 2.4.0 to term 2.4.1
Fixes for glibc compatibility. Specifically, libc.so.6
defines errno and h_errno as macros. Remember, macros in
standard include files effectively add new reserved words
to the language and break programs that used these words.
If you have porting problems, this is the first thing to
check.
Second, in some cases termwrap would end up in infinite
loops due to recursion. Recursion checks have been added.
This version of term has been tested with RedHat 5.2, and
S.u.S.E. 5.3.
COMMENTS:
TERM is still one of the better ways to connect through
a firewall without seriously compromising security. I use
term regularly with my cable modem to connect through a
firewall and work without the need for a phone line. I've
included an example script for using TERM with proxy
telnet. There is also native SOCKS's support if you have
a compatible server.
Finally, I find modems are just too slow to run remote X11
windows when using PPPD, but when using TERM, but even my
old 2400 baud modem I had five years ago was fast enough
for a couple of remote X11 windows when using TERM.
WHY MIGHT YOU WANT TO USE TERM?
Term is one of the easier ways to connect through a
firewall. Also, since term runs completely at the user
level, you can avoid breaking your firewall security just
because you want to connect from your home computer over
your cable modem.
Of course all the modem commands still work, so if you
want to connect two unix boxes over a phone line NOT using
pppd you still can. The advantage of TERM will be a more
secure connection, and faster remote windows.
RESTRICTIONS
Term is NOT multithread safe, and will probably never be
multi-thread safe. So you can NOT termwrap multi-threaded
programs like Netscape. However, you can termwrap a proxy
program and use programs like Netscape in proxy mode.
WHERE TO FIND THE NEW VERSION OF TERM?
You can find term at its normal location:
http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/network/serial/term/term-2.4.2.tar.gz
and
http://www.feynman.com/home/software/term-2.4.2.tar.gz
as soon as it is copied from the incoming directory.
Please note, some versions of Netscape and IE will store
the file without the .gz extension, without decompressing
the file.

The short story:
Kernel helper module (like 8390.o). Provides access to
VESA 3.0 bios services. See the README and vesa3.h for info.
The long story:
Many moons ago I wanted to use VESA 2.0 services to
run graphcis cards. Unfortunately (for the Linux kernel) VESA 2.0
didn't support setting graphics modes. Nasty. So, when VESA 3.0
came out with their new protected mode interface, I was quite happy.
Luke Bishop further got me involved by providing me a pointer
to the VESA 3.0 specs. With a little bit of work and some expert advice
from Luke, I am pround to release Version 0.1 of the Linux VESA 3.0
helper.
This module _is_not_ a ``full-featured graphics solution'', a la
FBcon, KGI, or X11. All it does it provide the necessary kernel services
such that FBcon (or KGI, or whatever) can call VESA 3.0 functions and
set the graphics mode, palette, get info on a mode, or what have you.
Someone (maybe me ;^) will have to provide the hooks into vesa3.o
forthose console subsystems.
Anyway, enough of my chatter. Get the package, try it out, and
drop your jaw in wonder.
- -------------
Note to kernel hackers: Is there a better way to allocate
selectors that what I use in my package? (yes, I know that I'm
allocating 2 selectors for every one I return - I want to fix that)

From: Steven Flintham <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Zgv 3.0 - SVGALib graphics viewer - released (ages ago)
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 01:27:30 GMT
=====BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE=====
[I (Russell Marks) don't have net access any more, but Steven has been
kind enough to upload/post on my behalf.]
Zgv v3.0's been uploaded to sunsite.unc.edu.
There's nothing hugely meaningful about the version number jumping to
3.0 from 2.8 - but given that 2.0 (for example) didn't even have
thumbnails, I thought it was about time to move up to v3.x. :-)
New features added:
- - Added `mrf' support. Mrf is a 1-bit-mono-only file format I thought
up while thinking about how you could compress such images more
effectively. For some kinds of input (esp. line-art), it compresses
better than GIF or PNG. (I've also written PD convertors to/from PBM -
look for `pbmtomrf'.)
- - Added bitmap fonts (from X, though you don't need X installed). You
can still get the old line-based font if you want, though.
- - It now remembers where you were in a directory if you return to it.
So if you go into a subdir then return to the parent dir, the cursor
will be on that subdir.
- - Added thumbnails for subdirs. These are made up of the first four
files in the dir squeezed together into a single thumbnail. Details in
the man page.
- - Added support for 1152x864 and 1600x1200 modes. You get at them by
prefixing the function key (F1-F8) with tab. (I can't actually test
these modes, but they should work.)
- - Zoom mode (for images smaller than the screen) works more sensibly
now, and is roughly twice as fast. (It also happens to fix an
occasional segfault in 320x200 modes - albeit only by completely
replacing the code. An unusual debugging technique, to be sure. :-))
- - There's now support for the 640x480 16-colour mode in the viewer.
It works by emulating an 8-bit mode, and either displays in greyscale
(default) or in dithered colour.
- - New `smallfiletext' option which reduces the size of the filename
text in the file selector. You may find this useful if you think the
text is too big or if you'd like to see more of the filename.
- - Alternatively, you can do `:' in the file selector to display the
full filename of the currently-selected file (or at least, as much as
will fit on a single line).
Bugfixes:
- - Previously, if errors occurred when zgv was loading a new file while
the old file was still being displayed, the error message appeared
over the top of the old image (which looked terrible). It now changes
modes to display the message if necessary.
- - The 7-missing-or-junk-pixels problem in 320x200 and 320x240 modes
has been fixed (finally).
- - Fixed starting-on-unreadable-dir problem.
- - Previously, if you started with `visual off', the mid-grey colour
was set to the tagged-file colour (i.e. red). Fixed that.
- - Bugs in usage output (i.e. output from zgv -h) fixed.
- - Fixed a couple of minor problems with the help pages.
- - Fixed a few spelling errors in the man page.
Other changes:
- - Updated png support (better late than never :-)). Apparently it was
terribly out of date before and did bad things for some files; thanks
to Greg Roelofs for pointing this out. Hopefully it's reasonably
up-to-date now, and should work with any future versions of libpng.
- - Sped directory reading up a little for directories where no files
